A blurry middle age?
Just like white hairs, presbyopia always comes when you are not warned. Not surprisingly, it can also be caused by an increasing computer usage that leads to eye strains, muscle fatigue and therefore an early onset of presbyopia.
Presbyopia is invariably linked to aging and lead to misunderstanding and repellence. My client had a friend who had denied to have presbyopia. She was depressed for a few months and was reluctant to go out. Until one day she gathered with her friends and found many of her friends had already wear reading glasses for a long period of time. That is it was just a common phenomena to appear presbyopia at her age. Luckily her experience didníŽt cause any serious harm but a trivial joke.
A lot of people think that having +1.00D presbyopia means wearing reading glasses with +1.00D. The fact is we have to take his refractive status (shortsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism) into accounts. Aside from those who have perfect eyesight, we have to calculate and compensate their refractive error before prescribing reading glasses.
This is the reason why some claim those ones who have shortsightedness do not have presbyopia, that is the plus power of presbyopia is cancelled by take off the minus power of? shortsightedness eyeglasses.
Hence whenever blurriness is found, you should come to optometrist to find out the reason. If which is really due to presbyopia then a pair of reading glasses should be prescribed according to your eye status and working used.
Common corrections for presbyopia
- A pair of far use and a pair of near use
- Adv: Highly adaptable, wide visual field
Disadv: Wear on and take off frequently. Quite inconvenient. May need to have a few pairs of reading glasses according to different working distance. Otherwise blurriness and dizziness may found.
- Mono vision- mostly used in contact lens wearer, with one eye look far and one eye look near
- Adv: No need to wear on and take off frequently and can handle both far and near work
Disadv: Not easy to adapt and not suitable for all. Always used for those who only have low presbyopia. May also affect the depth perception.
- Bifocal eyeglasses or contact lens
- Adv: Maintain both far and near vision of both eyes
Disadv: No intermediate vision (i.e. Computer distance). There is a separate line in between the lens and not very good in the outlook. For the bifocal contact lens may have glare and not suitable for those who have astigmatism.
- Progressive lens
- Adv: Cover both far, intermediate and near visual needs. The outlook is no different to the normal single lens too.
Disadv: Have to change the normal reading habit and learn a new reading angle to avoid the distorting area at 2 edges.
Progressive lens íV known from the name, the lens design covers different power from far to near and change progressively. So many people may think only a big large frame can cover such needs. But by the modification of the technology today, 30mm is already high enough to fulfill the needs of progressive lens. Furthermore, some short corridor design was launched to fit small face and high power clients' needs.
By combining the technological modification and application of computers, many lens supplier out more consideration on the normal human posture and living habit. So the latest lens does not only enlarge the visual field of vision and narrow the edge distorting area but also shorten the adaptation period.
Mr Ho (High shortsightedness, a new progressive lens wearer for about one month)
In the early onset of presbyopia, my optometrist prescribe a mono vision eyeglasses for me. It solved the problem of near vision except I had to bear mild imbalance feeling at far. But I found my presbyopia power was increased in the last eye check, so my optometrist prescribed me a pair of progressive lens this time. I found great improve at intermediate distance. And just a little bit difficulty when I lift up my head suddently. I have to take sometime to refocus by nodding my head. But the overall feeling is quite good.
Mrs Yung (A professional secretary, has been wearing progressive lens for 4-5 years)
Before wearing progressive lens, I found some difficulties with near reading. So I try to wear a pair of eyeglasses with lower power which make me read better. But felt dizzy when walk around. After wearing progressive lens, I found no more blockage between the world. I regain the safeness sensation. Also according to the instruction of my optometrist, I learn to use only the central part of the lens from up to down. And I found which is easy to see clear everything and I just only use one week to familiar with it.
Mr yung (Non-professional driver, has wear progressive lens nearly 3 years)
Presbyopia makes me need to take off the eyeglasses frequently that causes much inconvenience for those book lovers like me. It is not easy to accept psychologically by letting others know that you have presbyopia. But progressive lens make no different to the normal lens, which make me feel young. After learning the different angle for different distance, remind myself to keep my head straight and turn my head position more in driving. I found there is no disturbance any more.
Mrs Ho ( Bookshop keeper, new progressive lens wearer for 3 weeks only)
As a bookshop keeper, I have to watch the small bar code and computer screen all the time and the presbyopia brings me much difficulty to my job. Thus I accept the suggestion of my optometrist to wear the progressive lens. For my own power had change also, I have to re-adapt both far and near vision. Every time when I change the reading distance, I have to refocus and find the clear point. By following up with my optometrist, I now have great confident to overcome these problem soon.
Wearing tips of progressive lens:
- Face the object straight when you want to see. Move your head up and down until you find the image is clear
- Avoid using the distortion area at 2 edges. Rather, use the central portion.
- Practice at home or the place which you're familiar with before using outdoor.
- Remind yourself to use the upper portion when you go downstairs to avoid stepping wrong.
Misunderstanding of progressive lens:
Progressive lens is designed by the optical theory to fit the needs of different working distance. It does not change the focus automatically. As a result, it takes time to practice in order to gain the best effect.
Besides, not everyone is suitable to this type of lens. For those who have great power different in two eyes, limitation of head and neck movement, this type of lens may not suitable to prescribe progressive lens.
Progressive lens is known as convenience lens; since it lets you cope with the daily visual needs. But when you want to lock your focus on a certain object with a certain distance for period of long time, you better wear a pair of single vision reading glasses to gain a better and comfortable vision. So the progressive lens cannot substitute the single reading eyeglasses at all.
